Many of us often mistake black ants and termites (white ants) for each other, however the two are comparatively different.
In fact the two are not even related!
Ants are related to bees and wasps, whereas termites are actually related to cockroaches!

Black Ants

  • Compound eyes present
  • Bent antennaes
  • Waist present
  • Pointed abdomen 
  • Winged (reproductives) - Fore/Hind wings are not equal and are strongly veined
  • Do not feed on wood

Termites

  • No eyes
  • Straight antennaes
  • No waist
  • Blunt abdomen
  • Winged (reproductives) - Fore/Hind wings are equal and have no obvious veins.   
  • Do feed on wood (local species)
